Overview

A revolution is underway in the way we deal with waste in the UK. What used to be seen as a problem to be solved is now seen as resources that can be exploited. Valuable resources that previously would have gone straight to landfill sites will be reprocessed and recycled or turned into energy in new facilities at the heart of our communities. The government'Waste Strategy 2007 is leading to investment in a large number of new waste facilities and an enhanced profile for the industry. However, this radical new approach to waste also demands a revolution in attitudes to the design of those facilities. It is important that those engaged with the development of waste facilities embrace all aspects of good design practice.

This guide aims to promote better understanding of the importance of design in the waste sector and to help drive improved standards.

Chapters 2 to 4 of this document provide the background to the delivery of waste management facilities. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 set out ways in which this may be realised.
