In general, the private sector in Malaysia appears to be active and well capacitated. Local companies in the recycling business are skilled, use good equipment and a sophisticated approach to their business. Most of the companies were involved in several ways in community activities (such as placing recycling bins at schools and universities) which were not profitable but which raised the profile of the company.
During the early phase of the project a private solid waster recycling company was approached and requested to take part as the private partner. The company was initially interested to be involved in the project to promote the recycling concept and to increase the company's profile. The company later withdrew from the project claiming that the process was too dominated by the implementing agency.
