Meeting diversion targets for 2010, will be challenging, but this is being addressed by specific support currently delivered by WIP and WRAP. The total capacity gap for the treatment of MSW in 2012/13 is presently projected by our modelling to be 20.1million tonnes per annum Residual waste treatment infrastructure with the capacity to process between 8.4 and 8.9MT of MSW annually needs to be operational to achieve waste diversion targets. This requires capital expenditure in the range of £5-6bn, of which £3-4bn may be through PFI procurements. To meet the 2020 diversion targets, there is a further capital expenditure requirement of £4-5bn, of which £2-4bn may be through PFI procurements.
