• Over the next five years, over $3.1 billion in direct provincial transit funding will improve our transit networks and bring more service to more communities. GO Transit service expansion, equipment rehabilitation and replacement will mean GO Transit is a more attractive and reliable choice for travelling. Funding will also bring new and improved service for public transit with new buses and subway cars to meet growing demand.
• In addition to Ontario's direct investment in transit, by October, 2006, two cents of the provincial gas tax - a total of $1.4 billion over five years - will be directed to fund 83 municipal transit systems in 110 communities across Ontario. This investment will help bolster support for municipal transit expansion and increase ridership.
• Funding will be provided for the construction of transit-supportive high-occupancy vehicle lanes on major routes, including Highways 403 and 404 and the QEW, which will encourage carpooling, increase the capacity of our road network, and provide commuters with more efficient transit service.
• Planning is underway for new transit routes such as the Waterloo Region light rail transit system and the extension of the Spadina subway to York Region.
• Transit links in the region will be strengthened through the proposed establishment of a Greater Toronto Transportation Authority.
• Including funding from all three levels of government, approximately $2.8 billion will be invested in partnership projects, including $1.05 billion for GO Transit, $1.05 billion for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), $600 million for the Ottawa Light Rail Transit system and $150 million for York Region Rapid Transit.
