The Solutions: Modernizing and expanding justice facilities

The government is making investments to address these pressures. A number of the larger, complex justice projects will be delivered using alternative finance arrangements. Over the next five years, it is proceeding with:

•  An accelerated new courthouse construction program to replace aging and fragmented facilities across the province using traditional and alternative financing and procurement, beginning with the Pembroke Courthouse (traditional financing) and the Durham Consolidated Courthouse (alternative financing and procurement).

•  Construction of two new adult correctional facilities and planning and design for three additional projects.

•  Construction of two new detention centres for youth in conflict with the law, including the Greater Toronto Area Youth Centre (alternative financing and procurement).

•  The replacement of the Ontario Provincial Police's aging network of technical identification units.

•  Construction of a new centre of forensic sciences and new coroner facilities.

•  Other major rehabilitation projects to prolong the life of existing justice facilities.
