Food and agriculture
The government is committed to the continued success of the vital agri-food sector, which contributes over $30 billion annually to the provincial economy and which supports many small and rural communities. Investments to support innovative research and education and to protect food safety are essential to ensure a strong, prosperous future for the province's agri-food industry. Ontario will invest more than $24 million over the next five years in program-related infrastructure to support agricultural research, education and laboratory services. Key projects include:
• The new Rural Development Centre at Ridgetown College, a combined conference, education and athletic centre.
• Health and safety upgrades at the Food Safety Laboratory in Guelph, which plays an important role in the government's food inspection program.
• Addressing on-going renewal needs at the province's three agricultural colleges and 14 research stations.
