The Challenges: Decades of unplanned growth

•  Local highway and road congestion is costing the Ontario economy an estimated $2 billion per year in the Greater Toronto Area.

•  Clogged border crossings are costing the economy more than $5 billion per year.

•  More than 154,000 acres in this area have been paved over since 1993 - an area almost the same size as the City of Toronto.

•  If we do nothing to change this pattern of development, commute times could increase by as much as 45 per cent; another 247,000 acres of greenfields and farmlands could be paved over; and vehicle emissions could increase by up to 42 per cent.
