THE STARTING POINT

- Improved policing communications systems have been installed in police cars at a cost of $5 million.

- The condition of New South Wales courthouses is mixed. A court upgrade program begun in 2004 has seen 25 court houses across New South Wales refurbished or in the process of being refurbished. These include: King Street, Darlinghurst, Penrith, Goulburn, Central, Downing Centre, Wollongong, Moree, Wyong, Dubbo and Taree.

- Two new correctional centres have been opened at Kempsey and Windsor providing capacity for 700 inmates.

- A new Sydney Water Police facility has been built at Balmain.

- Redfern, Chatswood and Griffith police stations have been replaced providing enhanced modern facilities. Renewal works are needed elsewhere.
