In the audit part of closing a project the main focus is on information - checking what was achieved against what was planned. It is also extremely important to identify lessons to be learned for the management of other projects.
While it is common only to audit projects that have gone radically wrong - better lessons are often learned from successes.
NHSScotland Bodies are encouraged to develop a system for collecting "lessons learned" and ensuring these are appropriately distributed and continuously updated as part of their capital management process.
Further details on project management processes can be obtained from the Association of Project Management and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Core Reference documents on project management are identified for further information.
