3.12  Selection of Equipment

Note: It is essential that the role of Infection Control is considered during equipment procurement.

3.12.1  The selection of equipment must be undertaken in conjunction with each department involved. From the equipment list those items to be bought as new will be identified. This is may be a time consuming process assessing offerings from different suppliers. In some cases, it may be desirable/ necessary to request samples on loan from suppliers for testing them in a working situation.

3.12.2  The interior design of the particular facility will also need to be considered. The architect or a specialist interior designer will, in conjunction with user groups have agreed colour schemes for each area. This process may have included general guidelines for the selection of chair colours to complement the colour scheme, and the type of wood, which should be selected for desks, tables and chairs. This should ensure that there is an overall design concept for each department that highlights the differences between departments and allow each one to have its own atmosphere.

3.12.3  The date for final selection of loose equipment and furniture will be a key date in the commissioning master plan. Given the types of equipment to be procured, preparing detailed specifications, procurement timetables and lead in times for delivery the Capital Equipping Manager must be able to advise on programming to ensure orders are placed to allow delivery and installation in keeping with the commissioning master plan..

3.12.4  Group 2 equipment should also be given careful consideration so that it can be delivered to fit in with the contractor's build programme and also ensure that specification is consistent with the space assumptions within the room data sheets. Effective liaison between the Commissioning Manager and Project Manager is essential.

3.12.5  Particular focus should be given to X-ray equipment associated with ordering, delivery and installation requirements, which will be required at the design stage.
