2.40  The Department told us that they plan to expand the scope of the contract to include the telecommunications element of their Corporate Headquarters Office Technology System (CHOTS) (see Glossary) once the contract becomes due for renewal in 2000. CHOTS is the Department's largest information system providing wide area services (see Glossary) with up to "secret" security classification. Increasing the contract's scope to include the data transport requirements of CHOTS will increase the volume of traffic carried under the contract. The Department told us that they are currently negotiating lower prices with BT for the Secret Local Area Network Interconnect service, which would apply if the telecommunications element of CHOTS is added to the contract.
