3.5  Doors and Frames

All new doors and door furniture to be operable as per their design. Doors in wet areas shall be capable of withstanding wet cleaning methods such as hosing, spraying etc.

Locations and requirements for doors for building compartmentation and means of escape shall be agreed with the Authority's fire officer and health and safety officer pursuant to the Review Procedure.

All internal and external doors and door frames shall be selected and installed to be suitable for their intended purpose of security and fire rating, and be of a size to meet means of escape, disabled access and anticipated pedestrian traffic within the locations they are installed and areas that they serve.

All fire doors shall fitted with automatic closure set where appropriate, to ensure that doors return to their secure closed state after use and have intumescent strips.

All external and internal doors shall be suitable for access by motorised electric wheelchairs and sports wheelchairs. (Reference Disability Discrimination Act 1995)

All doors shall have vision panels where appropriate [need to specify when it is appropriate].  Vision panels in barefoot areas should meet the requirements of HSG 179 regarding safety in the event of damage or breakage.

All door apertures shall be wide enough for wheelchair access.

When in 'hold open' position double door sets to corridors should be rebated so that they are flush with the corridor.
