| 7.25 The industry must tackle these problems directly. 1. "Building Towards 2001" made eleven recommendations for improvements. Some of them are also addressed by this Review, such as "Changing the structure within which the industry handles contracts and works with designers". The CIEC and the CLG should set up a high powered task force to report quickly on implementation of "2001 's" recommendations for the industry to improve its image, and how to finance such a campaign. Other parts of the industry have already done so. Material producers are extensive individual advertisers and some also engage in collective advertising of products. Private house builders and manufacturers /suppliers have successfully financed collective publicity through the New Homes Marketing Board. If it is agreed to form a Construction Industry Development Agency (see Chapter 12), such marketing could become part of its duties. 2. Equal opportunities must also be vigorously pursued by the industry, with encouragement from Government. The CIC, CIEC and CLG should produce co-ordinated action plans to promote equal opportunities within the industry and to widen the recruitment base. |
