7.35 The DOE will fund about £23 million in research in 1994/5. It has also formed a panel with the CIC, the CIEC and the CLG to develop a "whole industry research strategy". That panel met for the first time in March, and is intended to ensure that the research carried out in the public and private sectors is relevant and also disseminated in a practical way. The Construction Industry European Research Club, launched by Mr Tony Baldry MP on 10th May and to be managed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), is another new initiative aimed at encouraging greater participation by UK companies in the European Union's research and development programme. The BRE also provides the secretariat for the International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction. The Science and Engineering Research Council's new innovation manufacturing initiative, which has been taken over by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, identifies construction as a sector needing specific attention. A new LINK programme "Integration in design and construction" has recently been approved. These are all highly worthwhile projects. But active attempts should be made by the DOE to involve clients in all of them, as the CIPS final report recommends. It is also important that these various initiatives should be monitored by the DOE to ensure that they are co-ordinated and delivering effective results.
