The West Gate Tunnel project in Melbourne has already exceeded its initial cost estimate by more than $1 billion,79 and there are reports that costs could further blow out.80 But the West Gate Tunnel is not the project with the largest cost overrun of recent times. It is one of six mega megaprojects that are being built and have generated $24 billion worth of cost increases, confirmed as at late 2020 (Figure 4.2 on the next page). There is no guarantee that there won't be further overruns in future.
Chapter 1 told the story of the West Gate Tunnel. The following sections tell the story of each of the other five current mega megaprojects that already has a substantial overrun.
