Implement government initiatives

All levels of government have a role to play in catalysing and supporting the shift towards a new phase of water efficiency.

State and territory governments must reinvigorate consumer education programs to highlight the discrepancy between water use in high-consumption communities as well as the contribution of water-efficient appliances.

In addition to their role as educators, governments should update eligibility criteria for businesses applying for water infrastructure grants. These should require participating entities to establish and maintain water efficiency programs and associated targets. Enhancing eligibility criteria for programs such as the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund would provide a meaningful opportunity to support increased water reporting in water-intensive industries.
